Subject: 85 900 Engine

I have an 85 900 base model with the base model engine, 8 valve non turbo with very little horse power. The car has 189,000 miles on it and is showing its age. The previous owner let her sons drive it for several years and they beat on it. I have got the rest of the car in good mechanical shape but there engine is approaching it's end of life. My mechanic has his brother in law's '88 900S that the tranny has died on, but the engine is in pristine shape. Can I put the '88 engine in my '85? th '88 is an automatic, my '85 is a manual- will the different engines mate to the different tranny? I could really use the boost in HP that would accompany the newer engine. Any Opinions on this? JB in MA
