Subject: Saab900 oxygen sensor(?)

Hi, all! I'm new to this group. We bought an automatic '94 900 non-turbo about 8 months ago, has 67K miles on it now. Runs pretty well except that it gives awful fuel mileage around town... about 17-18 mpg! Is that normal for this car? What should it be? Looking around in the engine compartment and comparing to the owner's manual, it appears that the PO removed the oxygen sensor. The picture in the manual shows the OS, however, in this car there is a plug in the exhaust manifold where it looks like the OS should have been. There aren't any wires in the vicinity, though, so I don't know if the connecting wire was removed as well. My questions are: did all US cars come fitted with OS's? Would not having one affect the fuel consumption? In any case, I am sure that it would not pass the required emission tests which are mandatory here in CT. Any helpful information would be much appreciated. Carlos Guerra
