Ken - From what you describe I would try the hall effect sensor next. It sounds like the culprit because of the relationship to heat. I have an 87 9000S. Mine is located on the right driver's side fender well near the windshield wiper resevoir. It should not be that hard to change. Check the Sobstory.com for price or www.thesaabsite.com.
