Subject: 96 900SE reverse ring on shifter sticking

I have a 96 900SE, and this weekend, the lift ring on the shifter that you pull up to go into reverse started sticking. Usually you can lift it anytime, but now it won't go up, but when you shift over to reverse, it pops up and works for a little while. Then in the course of shifting, it will stick again at random times, and not come loose again until I go into reverse. Has anyone had a problem like this before? The car was in the shop on Friday for some a/c work, and they said they didn't do anything to the shifter, but I have my doubts. Could someone forcing the shifter into reverse without lifting the ring cause this problem? Thanks for any help anyone might be able to provide. Ken
