Are you missing the suppressor unit on the aerial lead into the back of the radio? If you can pull the radio out - it should be large-ish slug-looking thing which forms part of the aerial connection. If it's not there then that's likely to be the problem. If it is see if you can swap it for another one as it may be faulty. Do you get the noise only on AM? What about FM?
