I have an 87 9000S 5 spd. Based my similar experience, it sounds like your shifter coupler has gone bad. It is a small oblong piece sandwiching rubber between to metal plates. It could have come apart. Another possibility is where the shifter goes into the back of the 5 spd. You may need a new shifter pin as well.
