Subject: Replacing valve cover gasket

What are the symptoms of a valve cover gasket that needs replacing?  Mine 
looks like it's leaking oil a bit on the side close to the firewall.

Is it difficult to replace (any gotchas)?  I know the gasket itself is 
cheap.  Is a torque wrench a necessity?
