Subject: elusive drivability problem ('85 900T)

Hi -- My '85 900T 16v has got me scratching my head right now. Maybe someone's seen the symptoms before and can help. * Car occasionally stumbles/cuts out for just a second or two. * This happens mostly (but not always) between 20 - 30 mph, and tends to get worse and worse until the car is shut off and allowed to sit for several hours. * In between stumbles, I can depress the clutch pedal and rev the engine up as much as I want. * Does not seem to happen when the car is cold * There may be the pattern of the symptoms being exhibited for a few days, followed by normal running for about a week. * Often (but not always) the symptoms seem to occur when the engine is at fairly high rpm with little load (such as when going downhill and engine- braking). * Loss of fuel economy. * Strong smell of gasoline/exhaust, which seems to occur almost independently of the other symptoms. * I once before noticed similar symptoms when I mistakenly left the gas cap at the gas station. * Chaging the fuel filter seemed to help a little Does anyone have any ideas/guesses? (please and thank you).
