This sounds like either a dead battery (dead enough for the starter motor to play dead but not enough for lights etc.). This happens. Or a terminal badly corroded. Or a battery wire broken but still with some contact. (Including possibly the ground connection). Of course if that car has a computer, there is a host of related possibilities too.
