Subject: Some problems in 9000i '89

I have 9000i '89 which has now 312 000 km. I have had the car for 20000km and the biggest worry so far is the engine noise. When cold, it makes a rattling (diesel-like) noise. In the normal temp the sound becomes smoother and more quiet, but still the engine noise is somehow coarse with tick-tick-tick sounds. The idle also wanders between 820-880 rpm. These symptoms have been the same last 20000km. I'm not satisfied with the car's performance (I have reached only 182km/h), even though I know it never has been a racket, should have bought the turbo... But what might be the cure for these sounds? Changing the timing chain or something bigger and more expensive? Could some products (e.g Forte engine flush) prolong the engine's life and make the noise smoother? The car has had Shell's synthetic oil which has been changed after 10000km. One more thing: What might cause mild shaking of the clutch and engine especially at cold start? Thanks, Terho
