The RF fender and RF side of the hood are always subject to rust most probably due to the presence of acid vapor from the battery (also on this side of the engine bay). To minimize rust on your good condition car, Clean out these crevices with water, Let dry completely (best to do in the summer) and treat it with oil mist down this crevasse. I would think that 'undercoat' would hold too much moisture in this crevasse, and contribute to rust. I use Linseed oil. A preventive measure would be to use a battery which does not vent except under extreme duress (Optima or similar) or use one with a vent which can have a hose connected to let it vent under the vehicle.
