I believe I have found a source for a high-quality 75W gear lube for the Saab 5-speed gearboxes. I'm sure this may have an application for the earlier Saab models as well, especially those that used hypoid gears, i.e. 99, 96, and 93. Apparently, Saab no longer supplies their dealers with 75W gear lube because of availability problems from their suppliers, and the typical alternate that the dealers used (Castrol) is also apparently no longer available. Lubriplate, a company based in Newark, NJ, makes lubricants primarily for industrial and commercial uses. They do have a 75W gear lube that meets API GL-5 and MT-1 specs; its also meets MIL-PRF-2105E and MIL-L-2105D specs. The Lubriplate 75W gear lube is their number APG-75, and comes in various sizes: a case of 4 ea. 7 lb. plastic jugs, a case of 12, 1 quart plastic bottles (part number L0120-013, and other larger sizes for industrial use. I just placed an order with a local dealer for a 12 quart lot. I guess I'll have gear oil for some time to come for my '85 900! I was faxed a spec sheet on this from Lubriplate; if any one would like a copy, please send me an SASE and I will photocopy it free of charge for anyone that may be interested.
