You are loosing coolant and it seems that you could have one of the following problems: 1) Bad cylinder head gasket, inspect oil if oil has a creamy substance it that is your problem if not perform a compression test on the engine and compare to specification if one of the four cylinder is low you have a bad head gasket at the same time as you are doing this test open the radiator and inspect the radiator for bubbles. 2) A crack in the cylinder head at the intake port if only white smoke is seen that could be the problem 3) A crack in the cylinder head at the exhaust port if you see water coming from your muffler at startup only that could be your problem You can test for 2 and 3 by emptying the coolant from the engine and applying air at a pressure of 12 PSI no more through the radiator top (you need a special tool to do this) and listen to the intake manifold or the Exhaust pipe for sound of air leaking. 4) on of the plugs that are usually used to seal the casting ports in the cylinder head is damaged and it is leaking ( I myself never saw one of these near the combustion area in an engine and these plugs are always on the outside of the head) inside the cylinder or intake valve or the exhaust halve. 5) If this Saab has a water heated intake manifold the intake manifold could be cracked and the water is leaking in the intake.
