Give me a deecnt CD-R any day > That hasn't been my experience. I'm a musician who listens critically to recordings all the time because I transcribe arrangement for bands. I do this through high quality headphones and my B&W Matrix 804 speakers. I love mini-disc. I have a mini-disc unit as part of my home stereo, a portable that I record rehearsals and gigs with, and a playback unit mounted in-dash in my car. To me, mini-disc sounds comparable to CDs played in my Sony ES series CD player (again, through the B&W speakers). I just took possession of a new Saab 9-5 wagon and I'm trying to figure out the best way to get mini-disc playback in it. The ATRAC compression method has improved a lot since the early 1990's when, I believe, it was first introduced. My units are all from the last two or three years and they sound great - at least to me. But mini-disc's biggest advantage isn't when you compare it to CD, it's when you compare it to what it was meant to replace - cassette. I used cassettes for years before switching to mini-disc and I'll never go back. As a recording medium (both live and from CD's) and for playback in the car I think it fulfills it's promise admirably. I'm constantly changing the sequence of my compilations, adding and removing tracks, etc. and I'm getting digital sound quality from a medium that's handier and more rugged. - Rob Malkin
