You obviously aren't familiar with modern diesel-engine technology.
Compared to petrol engines, modern diesels offers better fuel economy,
lower C02 emissions, equivalent or better real-life performance, longer
engine life.

And in most of Europe, diesel is vastly cheaper than petrol.
