I found out the other day that a few years ago a simple High School tech school won the national competition for electric car-conversion. They converted a VW Jetta to electric and won with an 80mph top speed that gave an 80 mile range !! Hmmmm. Now if I were to put a small gas engine in there with a generator for when I leave town. I could run the car MOST of the time off the batteries, only using the generator when I leave town ... and have the best of all worlds! See the engine and transmission in my Saab 900 are toast. 300,000 miles have really done them in. It would probably cost me $3000 to replace the whole power train ... from what I can tell, about the same to convert to electric-hybrid. The Saab 900 has a spacious engine compartment, if they could squash their converstion into a jetta engine compartment, a Saab would give even more room. So I wonder if anyone has ever thought of that??
