You can purchase an aftermarket warranty at just about any time up to the end of your factory warranty. I suspect $2200 is high - you should research other companies and switch to a more reasonably priced policy. I intend to purchase a 9-5 Aero in Spring, and will get an extended warranty near the end of the factory warranty _if_ it appears to be a troublesome car.
