Subject: How to disconnect "Check Engine" light?

I own a 1997 900S and the "Check Engine" light has come on just after leaving the 70.000 Km checkup. The dealer suggested I ran the car fast on the highway for a while, but it will not turn off. The car runs (apparently) perfectly. Is there any way to turn off this warning w/o special equipment? If it comes on again I believe I will have to take it to the dealer again. Any information will be appreciated.
