My '86 900S definitely has cold air coming out of the side vents (at least now that I have a new heater control valve it does!) in the A/C mode. In the heat mode you're correct - the center vents blow nice fresh cold air while the sides blow hot - I was enjoying that very feature today as I was out road testing my almost-two-grand auto tranny rebuild (and not regretting a penny of it!).
