The rim of a 17" wheel is located further from the center of the hub. This increases the force needed to get the wheel moving. According to a "racing" acquaintance who did some calcs, it increases the force required by 1% per wheel. If the 17" wheel and tire is heavier, it requires still more of an increase in force. Additionally, you are adding to unsprung weight, which is the bane of handling design. Now, all that said, some wheels are heavier than others in the same size. They vary from incredibly light to incredibly heavy depending on alloy and spoke design. So, there are a lot of variables to consider. I don't like 17" wheels in snow country, as the roads are just not that good. Maybe if you live in one of the non-freeze states they make more sense. bob
