The resistor unit has a direct 12v supply for speed 4, and 3 coils of resistance wire for the other 3 speeds. The supply to these 3 is controlled by a *thermal* fuse within the unit, which is torpedo shaped and has a black tip. Current equivalent fuses in the UK have a blue tip. Original black fuses were rated at 110 degC, but this may have changed. They are very cheap to replace, but must be crimped in place and NOT soldered, and be orientated as the original.
