This exact thing happened to my in my 9000 BUT it was the power steering fluid which leaked int the cockpit. PS fluid looks and smells a bit like brake fluid. Check the height of the fluid in the brake and power steering reservoir. Where the steering linkage connects to the rack and pinion there is a seal to keep the PS fluid in the rack. It must have started leaking there. I fixed it by changing my rack and pinion. If your a do-it-yourselfer, you can get a rebuild rack&pinion for about $150. There are a few FAQs at www.saabnet.com on changing out the rack. It takes a lot of elbow grease and a good part of the day.
