Subject: interior fan problem .... help please

I have a 1990 SAAB 9000, U.S. car. It has the regular, manual heater/ AC controls. Not the push button climate control system. Quite suddenly the slower fan speeds for the heater/Air Conditioning no longer work. The fan works normally at the highest speed (4). But the fan does not work for speeds 1,2 or 3. I'm thinking the rheostat just behind the fan speed control knob has failed, and I can get to that and replace it myself. However, the dealer mentioned that there is a resistor by the fan motor that could also be at fault. Does anybody have an opinion on this. If it is the resistor I'm going to have to take the car to the dealer to be fixed because I have no idea how to get to the fan motor or where the resistor is (any help with this?). Is there any way of checking the rheostat with a meter to see if this has become faulty? Any chance some wiring has become loose? Replacing the rheostat would be the cheaper fix, but I don't want replace a part that is not faulty. Appreciate your help.
