Subject: Re: Why a car backfire & smoke

It would be easier to diagnose if more information were given. Does it run fine just until the temp gage starts to move? Does it run bad after running 5 minutes? Does it do this after a bout of heavy acceleration. Does it do it more when it is raining or damp out? The smoke leads me to a FI problem or a vacuum problem. The backfire suggests it could also be something with the ignition (cap/wires). This is a long shot here. Verify operation of the checkvalve on the PCV nipple. There is a small diameter vacuum hose running to a plastic elbow in the valve cover. This line should have a checkvalve in it. Disconnect it at the intake manifold side and suck on the line. It should allow you to do this. Then blow on it. It should not allow you to blow through it. If it does and does not allow you to suck through it, re-orient the valve, it is installed backward. If it does not function as a checkvalve, replace it. The other long shot is the problem I had with one of mine. this is a big long shot. If you have a multimeter, check the O2 sensor lead while it is running and exhibiting this problem. It should have a DC voltage which goes slowly up and down between 0.2 and 0.7 (or so). If it reads high and does not move, it is an AMM problem. If it is high and doesn't move AND the code returned by the fuel injection computer is a lean code, it MAY be the ground connection on the head. unscrew it, wire brush all the ring connectors and the head. reassemble with a little contact grease and retighten.
