Well, in the good old days (beofre belt tensioners.. before belts even) a study was performed by SAAB which showed that quite a few people smashed their right knees into the ignition lock / or their huge keyrings. So they moved it to teh center console (and introducing the gear lock instead of steering wheel lock). On the 9000 they moved it to "the usual place" but the 'nospam didnt like it, so it got moved back down on the new 900. And lets face it.. "It's a SAAB-thing". :)
