The engine would whine when started but the sound went away after a couple of minutes. I live in Vermont and I thought it had to do with the cold. The dealer determined that the problem was a result of a poor bearing on the counter balance bearings. The bearing failed because it wasn't getting enough oil. There was a blocked tube that carried oil from the sump. They cleaned out the tube and replaced the bearing, now it whine free. Not sure if it's the same problem but I thought I'd mention it.
