BMW 3 series is too small. Not much different size wise to what you have now. I have a 9-5 Aero with 22k trouble free miles. In spite of what jlp said the 9-5 is a Saab from the wheels up. The 2.3 High output turbo is a classic Saab engine. Drive an Aero with a five speed and tell me you still want the Benz, then you want more of a touring sedan and not a sports sedan. I love my Aero, its the second Saab I have had. Still have my 94 9000 CSE Turbo w/135k as a 3rd family car. Just drive it and then tell us what you decided. Good Luck.
