I don't think so. The US spec wagon has the same feature on the liftgate. I guess they are assuming that sometime you might do something unsafe like let a couple of children ride in the back for a little while, and wanted to make it a little safer. There might even be a requirement to have the child safety latch- I haven't looked at SUV hatches, but they might have the same feature.
