Subject: Why does my antenna skip?

Any advice would be appreciated... I just replaced my antenna mast (1992 900 convertible), replacement mast with the original motor/antenna drive reused. I did it according to instructions in the manual and everything seems to work fine, except that the motor does not stop immediately when the antenna is either fully retracted or extended. As a result, the drive gear skips a couple of times on the antenna, with a bit of a clunking noise. I have never experienced normal operation as I recently purchased the car with a broken antenna, but assume that this is not normal. Does anyone have any comments or suggestions as to how to resolve this problem and/or comments as to the potential for damage if it persists? Thanks in advance.
