Is the engine a V6? The first two years of the new generation Saabs ('94 and '95) had a V6 "option", which used a timing belt. The V6 is an interference engine, so if the timing belt skipped badly (more than 5 or 6 teeth), you're going to need a new engine, because the pistons and the valves would have collided. I'm not the expert that most others here are, but I believe the 4-cylinder Saab's have timing chains, and are also non-interference engines - so even if the chain did skip, it wouldn't cause much more damage than couldn't be fixed by an oil change. Good luck; sounds to me like it's the shop's fault, and if they're an honest shop they'll admit. They'll also do their best to stand behind their mechanics and protect their reputation - so if you yell loud enough...
