Subject: 88 900i 8v problems

Hi all, I am wondering if I can get any advice from people regarding a few problems I've been having with my car lately. PROBLEM #1 I live in Calgary, Canada where we have emerged from winter - pretty cold too I must say, having just moved here. My car didn't like life here much this winter - somewhat to my surprise, being from Sweden and all. Anyway... getting back to the issues, I found my car would start up easily in the mornings but at each red light I would come to on my way to work (while the engine was still coolish - basically my entire 15 minute commute to work) I would need to rev the engine to keep it from stalling or running extremely roughly. If & when I let it stall it sometimes took a lot of turning over to get it running again. Also after stopping for a short time (say, going shopping for an hour) my car would often be quite hard to start. Now that the weather has warmed up, this hasn't been giving me as many problems since the engine is able to get up to operating temperature a lot more quickly. Any ideas as to how to fix this problem? I have some mechanical ability but am by no means a mechanic. PROBLEM #2 It seems that in hot weather my fuel pump makes a LOT of noise & occasionally stops delivering fuel to the engine. This has happened on a few occasions now that we have nice 28C weather. It also happened last fall but gave me absolutely no problems over the winter - I'm convinced it must have something to do with the hot weather. Last time it happened, my car had nearly a full tank of gas and I'd been driving the car for about half an hour. I noticed the fuel pump making progressively more & more noise, then my car began sputtering, had no power on acceleration and I was just barely able to get myself off the road to let the car sit for a while. After doing some shopping (2 hours) the car made it home without any problems and has been running fine for the last few weeks. Any ideas on these two problems would be appreciated. I don't think these 2 problems are related but who knows. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. cheers, Rick
