The older cars had a cylinder on the speedometer cable according to the Bentley. The later cars had a plug just to the right of the speedometer cable on the back of the speedometer which gives the signal for speed to the FI computer and the CC. It is a 3 prong plug . It is true, you do need to remove the knee bolster first.
