There isn't a design flaw. I've heard this assertion many times, but I definitely don't agree. The sliding yolk calipers are slightly odd and clumsy, but they perform very reliably, and give excellent braking. Much better, in fact, than the later ones. They do have a couple of problems. If you don't keep them well lubed, they will stick. And, the hand-brake mechanism can stick on older calipers. If I were you, I'd take the calipers that you have and dismantle them. Check the cylinders/pistons for corrosion or pitting. If they're nice and clean, just get a new set of seals (very cheap), and re-assemble. If, otoh, they are corroded, you'll need a good pair of rebuilt ones. Don't know where you are, but in the UK, NeoBros provide pretty decent rebuilds. In the US, there are plenty of companies, many of whom advertise on www.saabnet.com. A good pair of calipers should last 15 years or so before a rebuild.
