I have heard some stories from dealers about Mobil 1 actually clearing out slightly coked turbo bearings. Changing over _your_ car: ---------------------------- HOWEVER, changing to synthetic in an engine with higher miles (maybe over 50K or so) has caused seal leaks in some cars, notably Saabs. Apparently there is some ingredient in dino oils that keeps the seals pliable and synthetic lacks it. It's a long term situation as those who've used Mobil 1 in low mile engines have not reported the problems. Mobil 1 vs. Castrol --------------------- Mobil starts in the lab and builds the oil from scratch. They blend a base and add all the good stuff oil needs. Castrol starts with dino oil and removes all the impurities to get a base, then adds all the good stuff. There have been many negative posts about Castrol from folks who have no idea what they are talking about. They get all bent out of shape because Castrol starts with dino oil and "it's not really synthetic". Well, argue the definition of the word synthetic if you want, lets just call them both "engineered" oils. Which is better ? Mobil 1 has been around longer and they are not yet any wonder stories about Castrol. We'll have to wait and see. I've yet to see and scientific tests comparing the two head to head in real world conditions. Since Mobil 1 only costs a few cents more, I go with Mobil 1 as it is proven. As a secondary note, Castrol has a part synthetic/part dino that they sell for less money. That might be good for folks who are worried about their seals and don't want to go with a pure synthetic. Bob Mobil understand the process at all. discovered a way to start with dino
