Subject: 900i driveline noise

Hi I've just purchased a 1992 900i 2.1 16v manual coupe with 120,000 km on the clock and am a little concerned about a noise in the driveline. Wasn't aware of it at the time of the test drive - just too impressed with the amazing refinement of the vehicle, it's zip and zap, road holding, steering etc. to notice it. Here's my description of the noise: . sounds like reduction gearing but not gearbox - a whirring sound . present at all times, even when gearbox is in neutral and coasting . synchronised with wheel speed, and easier to hear at lower vehicle speeds - say around 20 km/hr My guess, without knowing the internals of the driveline setup is deduction gearing associated with the differential/final drive. Any guesses on whether I have a real problem, or is it a characteristic of that design vehicle? Warren P.
