Subject: soft brake pedal = master cylinder?

1984 900 S w/130K mi. has developed a soft brake pedal. It's traveling a full 2 inches or so before stopping, and the brakes feel like they aren't getting any power assistance. As if you tried braking without the vehicle running. Pumping helps a little and about half the time they work fine. Brake/clutch fluid reservoir is full. Master cylinder? That's an expensive part so I'm wondering if it could be anything else, like adjusting calipers. I had all new calipers and rotors put on by Midas a few months ago. I believe the MC is the original part, so maybe it's time has come. I have all repair receipts since the car was new and don't see that it was ever replaced. Thanks for any info! -jw
