In the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's, GM owned the Frigidaire Division that
produced refrigerators, freezers, electric stoves, automatic washers and
dryers.  Sometime later they sold the division and I don't know who owns it
now.  They didn't wait till the 1980's to diverse.
