Subject: Re: Transmission Question

That sounds like my first encounter with the 1983 99 GL I bought many years back: There is a spring system in front of the centre console (under the carpeting) whose job is to keep the stick positioned between 3rd and 4th, when in neutral (in other words, if you're in neutral and drag the stick left to a point between 1st and 2nd, it should spring back to the middle. If it doesn't, then the spring has broken. All gears will still be engagable, but it is quite difficult to find third: when leaving second, you tend to get fifth instead. If this scenario fits, then we are *not* talking about a centre console or gearbox problem. Fixing it is very cheap (USD 3.00 for the spring), but demands a couple of hours' work, mainly in tearing up the carpet, plus the accessories console between the footwells, as well as some plastic ventilation ducts. You'll find a metal frame with plastic rollers that contact a square sleeve that has been pressed onto the gear selector shaft. The spring is there to apply tension to the rollers against the sleeve (by now you can probably guess that I've had 4 visits to that area, to help friends). Try to avoid loosening the frame from the rest of the car, otherwise you have to reposition it later. BTW my disclaimer is that this is the setup for the 1983 cars - let's hope that the 1989 is the same. Tell us what your diagnosis and fix turns out to be . . . kind of curious now ;-) Regards, Robert (1983 900 GL, 1983 99 GL (R.I.P), 1999 9-3 200, 2001 A4 Avant 1,8 Ts) Dave Hinz wrote: > is (ittai_shiunopsamo.com) wrote: > : A friend just bought a 89 saab 900 and when she let me drive it, it seemed > : like there were only three gears.
