Synthetics were considered due to the extreme working environment of turbos, up to 100000 rpm, possible oil starvation if the oil is too thick during the start. My manual for my 1993 9000 states: "Saab Turbo Engine Oil or an oil which meets the requirements of API service ...". As we have seen here, this means synthetic or semi-synth. The manual also says: "We advise against the use of other additives". So there you have it directly from the horse's mouth. While the synthetic's main funtion is to protect the turbo, it may well help keeping the engine in good shape. Johannes
