Subject: Re: Do you change oil yourself

As I stated in my earlier post on this thread, I have changed the oil in both of my classic 900's since day one (except for the routine service points at the dealer). The classic 900 is one of the "easiest" cars for DIY oil changes. Simply slide one of the low-profile oil containers with built-in catch funnels below the oil drain (no jack required) and drain the oil. Then, move the catch funnel to the area beneath the filter area, place a zip lock baggy over the filter, and remove the filter. If done correctly, there will be absolutely no oil (or very little) lost from the filter because of the plastic baggy. Total time for oil drain, filter replacement, and oil fill is less than 15 to 20 minutes worst case. Note: Use a new copper washer for the drain plug and torque the drain plug to 21 to 29 lb/ft (29 to 39 Nm). I have gotten to the point where I never have one drop of oil on my concrete driveway after an oil change. I won't let the quick change people touch either of my classic 900's. I've heard horror stories of overtorquing of the oil drain plug, and cracking the aluminum sump. Guess what, this is not a simple and inexpensive replacement as on some American or Japanese cars with pressed steel oil pans. This is "big" bucks . . . If I were not using Mobil 1, the total cost of changing oil with conventional oil with filter would be around $6.50 to $8.00, depending on oil type and filter used. Plus, the sump is "never" over filled. This is one of the hardest things on an engine as it causes foaming in the sump which actually can lead to lack of lubrication. Don
