Subject: Manual Gearbox Failures

There seems to be a general idea that although the bodies and engines last forever on our cars, gearboxes seem to be a weak point. Many poeple have said on this NG that they junked the car when the gearbox went. But what actually happens when a gearbox dies? Does it get so noisy it becomes unuseable? Does is seize up suddenly? Or does it just deteriorate to the point that you can't get it into gear? I've driven many other cars with noisy boxes and cheerfully ignored it (after changing the oil) for many tens of thousands of miles. If I do the same on my Saab, am I going to be stuck by the side of the road with a seized 'box and be unable to move the car? Or am I worrying too much?
