There is information on these at Saabnet. under the bulletinboards, 9k, search on balance chain. Some advocate removal. I do not. Apparently, the lubrication to the drive chain is less than optimal with oil level at full. A 1/4 - 1/2 qt more (over full) apparently helps reduce wear. I do not know first hand about this. If the chain breaks, it is a major problem. It can be done with the engine 'in situ' from what I read. I am sure that the Saabnet BB has much better information.
