Starting in 1989 SAAB used "beefier" pinion bearings/gears in the 900's gearbox and I believe that they are incompatible with prior model years,. If the gearbox from the 1988 is good, I'd recommend dropping it in instead of swapping the bearings. With the lower torque output of the 900S [compared to the forced induction engines], the old pinion design held up fairly well, overall.
