I've 85 900 8v--same engine as yours--and when the temp is at normal and I'm driving on the highway, I do tend, once in a while, to creep up near the redline, shifting at up to 6000, but generally I shift before 3500. If you're merging into highway traffic sometimes you just have to get the engine up there. As for wishing you had a turbo, let me suggest that you consider some modifications: intake, exhaust, camshaft, and a few pressure regulator. http://www.saabperformanceparts.com has a bunch of goodies that will turn your 8v N/A into an Acura destroyer.
