A bypass filter is a second filter added to the oiling system. It takes a small percentage of the oil which is flowing and sends it through an extremely fine filter. A standard full-flow filter is usually quite effective in the 20-40 micron range, and won't take out water. At least some bypass filter elements will remove particles less than 1 micron, and also remove water. Without water, it is very difficult to make acid. Without the solids and acid, the oil will remain serviceable for a much longer period. Many large diesels have been using bypass filters for many years. Dick in Falls Church
