Actually, it's rather important that the Shuttle's cargo bay doors
open in space (because that's where the radiators are) and close
before de-orbiting and landing back on Terra Firma (because they'd
screw up the aerodynamics something fierce, and the thing already has
the glide rate of a brick with the doors closed).
If the doors stick - either way - they're in /BIG/ trouble, so
making sure they don't is A Good Thing. And they probably use a
synthetic grease for low-speed things like hinges.
