Subject: Re: dodgy headlights 9000

Andy, I also had similar on my '92 9000 CS 2.3 16i. But my diagnosis was different from that reported by Dave W (below) - which I'm sure is also good advice. Turned out to be the headlamp bulb spring clips which tend to heat up and lose their temper (especially if you drive with headlamps always on). These clips are seriously difficult to see and fiddle with at the same time with the headlamp units in the vehicle. Easy on the bench. Removing headlamps is easy. First disconnect battery for safety, then pull all electrical connectors off lamps. Remove radiator grille and pop the indicators (clip inside). Then you can remove the headlamp mounting bolts (one outboard, one inboard) and lift the headlamps free. With lamp face down on the bench (on rag or newspaper to protect lens) you can see exactly what's wrong. By removing the clips, you can judiciously bend for maximum downward pressure on the bulb flange. May take a couple of goes. Replacing clips would be even better. Reassembly is simple reverse of disassembly. Nothing tricky. After reconnecting battery, remember to lock/unlock vehicle to reset alarm (otherwise it tends to go off) then enter radio security code to reactivate. Whole job about 1 - 1.5 hours. Cured both of mine a year ago and they've been OK since. I would recommend this procedure for headlamp bulb replacement rather than messing around under the bonnet. I think that's how the clips get bent in the first place.
