Don, if I were doing the job I would definitely get the axle assemblies rebuilt while they are out - that would eliminate any questions about the bearing surfaces, as well as giving you new boots & grease. At $75/side, it's a pretty good deal. At the very least, fully degrease the joints & repack them, and maybe change the outer boots. Also, while it doesn't take too much time to get the axles out & back in, you really should get an alignment afterwards, so factor that into your thinking.
