Subject: 9-3 2001 TiD Sipping Oil

Hello again, Another question about our 9-3 TiD. I check the engine oil every fortnight / month and after about the first 1000 miles from new (where it needed a top up every ~400 miles from just above low, to just below high) the oil consumption has been mainly zero. However, occasionally the oil level quickly drops by about 1/2 over 500 miles. My driving style is pretty constant and economical (>50mpg in summer, ~46mpg in winter). Is the oil something to be concerned about, or do most Saab TiDs exhibit this behaviour? The handbook warns that TiDs do use a small amount of oil. I top the oil up with Mobil 1 for diesels. I'm not going to ask which is the best oil to use, because such questions seem to result in more posting than disabling the running lights (BTW in the UK Saabs are supplied with their running lights disabled - from memory there is a page in the manual telling you which fuse to replace in order to enable them again). Anyway, going back to oils, my question is: Is it OK to top up the engine filled with Saab 10-40W synthetic oil (from service) with Mobil 1 0-40W synthetic oil? Or should I be worried about oil incompatibilities when mixing the two? I hope I haven't stirred up some long running discussion about oils with this question... Finally, I've had the "Check Oil" SID message pop up twice, yet both times the oil level was at 2/3 full. Does the "check oil" come on when the oil is low, or every 4 months, or both? Cheers, Tony.
