Porter, Naturally, you're going to get a variety of opinions on the merits/demerits of Saabs. Personally, I love 'em! Only other car I've owned in the last 10 years was Audi because Saab can't figure out how to get power to all 4 wheels ;^) One important point, though: it's important when you hear about "maintenance nightmares" to separate issues with the car from issues with the *dealer*. For a variety of reasons, Saab has managed to find itself a higher-than-average number of really crummy dealers, especially when it comes to service. My advice: buy yourself a nice Saab, then do some research and find a *good* mechanic to take care of it. Don't let stories that originate from incompetent dealer techs sway your opinion about the car itself.
